Chapter 53
“What are we going to do?” I asked, my hands trembling so badly I had to clench them together on my lap.
Benjamin didn’t answer me right away. He picked up his phone, his jaw tight, and dialed a number. “Marcus,” he said, his voice low and deep, the kind of tone that sent a shiver down my spine.
I watched his hand tighten around the phone as he continued, “We have a problem. An anonymous messenger sent something to the news about Lucy’s disappearance. Look into it.” His tone was clipped, sharp, leaving no room for questions.
Then silence. A pause. And without another word, he ended the call.
I shifted my gaze to Daisy, who was sitting cross-legged on the couch, her little iPad glowing in her hands. She hummed quietly, her eyes lost in the colorful game she was playing, completely unaware of the storm circling us.
I turned back to Benjamin, my throat tightening. “I’m scared,” I whispered, my voice breaking despite how hard I tried to hold it together.
