“Umm… yes, that’s what you told me,” I said, my voice softer than I meant it to be. It felt like my throat was closing in, every word scraping out as if I had swallowed sand.

The officer across from me leaned forward, his dark eyes steady. “Did you do anything?”

For a second, my world stopped. The words slammed into me like a heavy weight. My palms went clammy, and a sharp heat spread through my chest. My mind was on fire, every thought flashing at once. Could he see through me? Could he tell?

Before I could even open my mouth, Benjamin’s voice cut through the silence. “Mind the kind of questions you ask, officer.” His tone was cold, controlled, but I saw the way his hand tightened around the armrest of the couch.

The officer’s head turned slowly toward him. “It’s all part of the investigation, Mr. Grey.” His voice didn’t rise, but the firmness in it made the room feel smaller.
