Adeline sat on the plush velvet couch, her posture perfectly composed despite the storm brewing beneath the surface. One leg rested elegantly over the other, her fingers tapping rhythmically against her thigh as she stared at the city lights beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The penthouse was unusually quiet.
The dim glow from the chandelier painted the room in shades of gold and shadow.
Reflections danced across the sleek black marble floors while distant traffic hummed far below, reminding them that the world continued turning despite the wars being planned within these walls.
Across from her sat Charles.
Relaxed.
Comfortable.
Dangerous.
One arm rested lazily against the armchair while the other held a crystal glass of whiskey. He swirled the amber liquid slowly, watching it catch the light.
