Chapter 85
“McCurdy, my office.” His voice sounded a little bit sour, like he had a sprained throat. Ruth dropped all she had packed and headed to his office. The general floor was slowly dispersing with workers signing out from their shifts. She was able to give a headcount if need be.
When she got to Clayton’s office, she knocked on the door and opened without waiting for a response. When she walked in, it was unusually dark. Yes, it was evening and almost time to leave work, but Clayton never turned so many lights off. Adding to that, the window was drawn closed. He was standing facing the closed-up window.
“Clay?” She walked slowly and cautiously to his desk. The room was quiet, the only sound was the click of her stiletto heels on the tiles.
“Why are you so quiet?” She walked to where he was standing. She could barely see things properly, but something was able to locate his shoulders.
“I still can’t get this morning out of my head.”
