Chapter 125. My Fault
CHARLOTTE
I must have cried myself to sleep, because when I opened my eyes, the room was dark except for the faint glow of the hallway light from under the door.
My lashes felt stiff with dried tears, and my throat burned.
Not only that, my entire body felt heavy, as if grief itself had turned into something physical and settled on top of me.
I blinked my blurry heavy lids and checked my phone.
The cracked side of the screen was completely black, but I managed to see the time.
11:07 p.m.
I wondered how it was 11 p.m. when they gave me until 10 p.m.
Well… let’s just say they took pity on me and allowed me to stay past 10 p.m.
I pushed myself up slowly.
My joints twisted painfully, and my body ached everywhere.
I pulled off the purple gown I wore to the party. I had thought it would be a good night. I thought I’d be confident, dazzling—maybe even make a memory worth holding on to.
But clearly, I expected too much.
