Chapter 34. All Lies

Before I could react, her chair screeched backward, nearly toppling over. She wiped her tears angrily and bolted toward the exit with shaky legs.
My heart jumped straight into my throat.
“Charlotte—wait!”
I grabbed her bag and ran after her. A lot of thoughts were running through my mind and I didn’t understand anything.
Why did she call me a liar and a manipulator?
Was I the reason she’s depressed?
Outside the restaurant, the night slapped me in the face with cold air as I stumbled out after her. I spotted her rushing down the sidewalk, her shoulders trembling, her pace frantic and uneven in her heels.
She wasn’t thinking—just walking very fast.
I ran toward her and opened my mouth to call her again—
And that’s when I saw the horrific scene. The traffic signal flicked back to green. A silver car sped toward her and she stepped right into the road.
