Chapter 1. The Shocking Thing
On a paved traffic road crowded with various vehicles, Harry was driving the car with an uneasy feeling. He didn’t know the meaning of this premonition, so he decided to go home earlier than usual.
Harry felt anxious, as if something was happening to his wife. After this morning’s argument with Angeline, Harry was so unfocused at work that he only thought about his wife.
Now, his anxiety was heightened after Angeline’s number became unreachable. Was something bad happening? Harry could only exhale anxiously.
With blue eyes staring straight ahead, Harry picked up speed to get home.
Harry’s car arrived in the courtyard of his house; the key was turned, and the engine was turned off. The man didn’t step out immediately; he paused behind the wheel.
Harry froze; the expression on his face that previously looked worried now turned flat. His gaze was fixed on a white car that Harry didn’t know who it belonged to, parked in his yard.
Harry still wanted to think positively, but didn’t when his eyes saw a pair of men’s sneakers in front of his porch. Who does that belong to? The question immediately popped into his head.
All conjecture now raging in his brain, the man’s heart was suddenly beating fast, along with the blood flow boiling towards the head.
Harry’s hands were clenched into fists, his fingernails turning white. Without further delay, he smashed the door into the wall, making a loud noise that startled the occupants inside.
“Angeline!” called Harry in a high voice, his flushed face showing how angry he was.
“Angeline!” Harry half-chanted his wife’s name as he strode into the room.
Harry kicked the closed door into the wall, his eyes darting around the room. Harry looked angry.
How could he not be? Because there was a shocking show ahead.
An unmarried man and woman were fighting over the blanket covering their bodies. Both of their faces looked of course.
“Angeline…” Harry’s voice sounded a little shaky. Disappointment and anger were now united in his heart.
Without waiting for an explanation from Angeline, Harry strode angrily towards the man who had defiled his wife.
Harry roughly pulled the man’s body to make him fall to the floor. Punch after punch was delivered by Harry, leaving the man helpless with a face full of cuts and bruises.
Harry beat the man with all his strength; his breathing was ragged, along with the pain of the cuts made by his favorite woman.
There, Angeline was busy covering her innocent body with a blanket while calling out to Harry. The woman cried at the sight in front of her.
“Harry! Stop it, Harry!”
Harry didn’t care about her.
“Harry!” Angeline screamed with tears streaming down her face. “Harry! Please!”
Harry didn’t stop until the fresh blood coming out of the man’s nose hit his hand.
“Harry! Stop hitting him! Stop hurting Daniel! He’s my boyfriend!”
Time seemed to stop. Harry’s clenched hands hung in the air, the man frozen in place.
What had he just heard?
“Harry, stop! Please, don’t hurt him anymore. Poor him. Poor Daniel. He’s my lover.” Angeline pleaded, her voice sounding heartbreaking.
So, she was defending this man? Harry was stunned in disbelief.
The man in the gray suit rose to his feet, and with a gasp, he turned to his wife. Harry saw with his own eyes how his wife was sobbing, begging him to let go of the man named Daniel, Angeline’s lover.
“He was… your lover?” Harry asked, his heart aching as he spoke to Angeline.
Angeline did not answer; she just cried while nodding in response to her husband’s question.
Harry smiled sadly, and he swallowed with a feeling of not knowing. What reality was she currently experiencing? Was he dreaming?
“Angeline, are you drunk? Were you set up by this asshole? Tell me, what really happened?” Harry asked with a million hopes in his heart. He still wanted Angeline to come back to him.
But she didn’t.
She shook her head and explained that she wasn’t drunk or being set up. Angeline was fully aware of what she was doing with Daniel. She was obviously having an affair.
“I admit that this is wrong, Harry. But I can’t lie to my heart. I love him. I love Daniel. I’m sorry.” Crying, Angeline said everything.
“That easy, Angeline?” Harry shook his head in disbelief, trying to hold back the tears that were about to burst from disappointment. His eyes were already glazed over. “So, what does two years of marriage mean?”
Angeline sobbed even more, her voice trembling. “I… don’t know.”
Harry laughed sadly to cover up the hurt that showed in his eyes. He couldn’t believe what his wife was saying.
A moment later, there was a coughing sound. Unexpectedly, Angeline rushed down and approached the man, who looked to be dying.
“Daniel! Your mouth is bleeding!” Angeline’s voice sounded very worried; she put Daniel’s head on her thigh. Her white hand gently rubbed the man’s cheek. Seeing her lover helpless like this made Angeline even more sad.
Harry froze in shock. Yes, seeing his wife sleeping with another man, plus having to witness how Angeline worried about her affair, all of this was indeed very surprising.
Harry felt weak; as a man, his pride was hurt by his wife’s actions. However, he also couldn’t do anything.
Angeline helped Daniel up; she picked him up and carried him outside, about to treat the wound on his face.
Meanwhile, Harry was enjoying his wife’s betrayal.
“Why, Angeline, why did you do all this? What, there’s no longer the slightest place in your heart for me?” Harry mumbled while holding back the pain in his heart.
Sometime later, there was the sound of a car engine starting. Harry guessed that it was his wife and Daniel; Angeline had gone to take her lover to the hospital.
Harry let out a long sigh, still remembering in his mind how Angeline threw words before she left the house with her lover just now.
“You must take responsibility, Harry! If Daniel is seriously injured, I will sue you! And most importantly, we’ll get divorced after this.”
Harry could only stay silent with a flat face; he couldn’t get angry. Instead, Harry wanted to plead and ask.
Why?
However, he realized that his wife had changed. Angeline had looked different in recent times, perhaps because she was tired of living with Harry. Moreover, they had never been blessed with a baby, making their home life even more lonely.
Harry remembered that he had been busy. So there was no time to talk to his wife. Harry was too busy fixing the company, which was filled with problems, so he ignored Angeline unintentionally.
“Are you lonely because I’m always busy, Angeline? Then, should you use my busyness as an excuse to have an affair?” Harry smiled sadly with a wounded heart.
