God, she was so expressive—so savage without even trying. I bit back a smile.

“You don’t believe in my love, and I get it,” I said softly. “But I promise you I won’t give up. I’ll make you fall in love with me, Charlotte.”

She let out a short laugh. “Then what? Mission accomplished? You’ll show your true self and break my heart?”

“After you fall in love with me, I’m going to make you mine forever. We’ll have a family—as many kids as you want.”

She giggled and stood to her feet.

“All men are good at it—saying the words that make women feel secure, make them let their guard down. Aren’t you all the same?”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“I should be the one apologizing,” I said. “A man like me hurt you—I get why you have trust issues. But please… go easy on me. A chance is all I’m asking.”
