The fog in my head was lifting, replaced by a manageable throb.
I was just starting to feel human again when Leo’s phone—distinct and jarringly loud—cut through the penthouse’s calm.
Leo, who had been leaning against the kitchen island watching me eat with an amused expression, sighed and pulled the phone from his pocket. He glanced at the screen; his brow furrowed.
“Devin,” he answered, his voice shifting into that crisp CEO tone that always sent a little shiver down my spine. “It’s my day off. This better be—”
He stopped, listening. A deep groove formed between his brows.
“The Tokyo beta? How? Run the diagnostic again.” A pause. He turned slightly away from me, lowering his voice. “No, don’t patch it through. Use the… the emergency protocol. My code. It should bypass the queue.”
