That evening, I returned home.
Still unsure why Charlotte had suddenly asked to take all my time—if possible, to come back only in the evening.
I’d waved it off, assuming it was because of her friends. Maybe she wanted to spend more time with them, and my presence might make them less comfortable.
The music coming from the house was deafening. They were clearly enjoying themselves.
I parked my car at the entrance, killed the engine, and just sat there for a moment, cooling down.
The back seat was piled with gifts and flowers—things I’d picked out for Charlotte on my way home.
