Chapter 97. Next Morning

I stayed there for a while, listening to her soft breathing as her head rested on my chest.
There was something indescribably peaceful about watching her sleep.
After a few minutes, I carefully lifted her head from my chest and tucked a pillow beneath it.
She mumbled something, reached for me instinctively, but I brushed my thumb across her cheek.
“I’m not going anywhere, sweetheart,” I whispered. “Sleep.”
She sighed and stilled again.
I pulled the blanket up to her shoulder, tucked a stray curl behind her ear, and stood up quietly.
My stomach growled the moment I straightened—loud enough to make me chuckle softly.
“Right… food,” I murmured under my breath.
She’d told me that afternoon that she’d made pasta.
So I carefully sneaked out of the room, making sure not to wake her.
