Lyra’s POV
I still can’t believe how politely Valerie greeted me today, as if nothing had ever happened between us. I forced a casual smile and managed a quiet, “Hi,” my voice barely above a whisper. She leaned back in her chair, blew gently on the tips of her perfectly manicured nails, and let out a soft, amused chuckle.
“You know I wouldn’t bring up the part where your husband closed down my boutique,” she said, her tone light but laced with that almost imperceptible barb.
I felt my chest tighten. “I’m so sorry. He didn’t mean to—”
Valerie cut me off with a tilt of her head and a gentle, patronizing pat. “Oh, darling, there’s no need to apologize. I’ve got everything under control now. Really, go enjoy your party, Mrs. Alistair-St. Claire.” She stood, smoothing the fabric of her dress, and strolled away with that same mischievous grin curling at one corner of her lips.
