I stepped into the hospital room and everything seemed to slow down at the sight of him.

Adrian.

Alive.

Bruised and bandaged and paler than I’d ever seen him,but breathing.Present.Real.

Something inside me cracked wide open.

His head turned weakly on the pillow,his eyes fluttering open,and when they landed on me,he whispered my name like a question.Like a prayer.

“Amelia?”

I moved without thinking.Sat down in the chair beside him,careful not to touch anything,but close enough to touch if he reached for me.I didn’t say anything.I didn’t know where to start.

I swallowed hard and looked at him.Really looked.

He was watching me too,his gaze tired but soft.”You’re here,”he said quietly.

“I am,”I whispered.”They wouldn’t tell me anything.I just…I waited.”
