We got to Luigi's a little before seven, and the manager himself, led us to our table. People’s eyes followed us. William Thornhill was well enough known that even if you didn't recognize him by name, you thought you knew him. Like a character actor you've seen in a dozen movies, you know you've seen him before, but not exactly where. Even without his presence, they might have watched as we three slaves were scantily clad by most normal measures for Fresno. Nothing exactly visible, but a lot on display; plus both Bill and Robert were good looking, fit men, who'd normally attract some female attention anyway. Glasses of ice water miraculously appeared.
