Chapter 91. Breaking the Code of Silence
The car went inside the gate of a heavily guarded building near the police headquarters. After a thorough screening, they were led to a small studio apartment inside the place.
“Switch off your phones. We will change your identity and you have to live here under disguise. In a few days, we will hand over your new identification documents. Are you married?” asked Officer Gorreto.
“No, we’re engaged.”
“We will arrange for an officiant to get you married soon.”
“Is it necessary?” asked Matteo. He had plans to marry her differently.
“Yes, it is. Only your wife and immediate family members will avail of the privileges the state provides for witnesses. Here is a phone I want to keep with you. I’ll contact you through this,” said the Officer handing him a mobile phone.
“You have to sign an agreement to avail all privileges under the Witness Protection Program of the state of organized crime.”
“Sure, I will.”
“Be ready by 9 o'clock in the morn
