Chapter 1. The Mate Ceremony

“Is that what you’re going to wear?” My mom asked me as she eyed me with disgust, judgement thick in her tone.

“It’s…” I looked down at the beautiful black dress that I had spent three months worth of savings on before I looked back at her. “Mom…”

“Sara, you can’t wear that. It’s your sister’s wedding.” She walked past me and went into the kitchen. The smell of fried eggs filled the air.

“Are you serious? What’s wrong with it?” I followed her, stopping at the doorway.

“You look like a sl*t wearing that,” she replied without looking at me. “Are you trying to seduce your ex? He chose your sister, not you, dear. Not even the sexiest black dress can change that.”

My heart felt like it was stabbed. I swallowed hard as I tried to hold back tears. I opened my mouth to speak but no words came out.

A Few Hours Later

Never in my life would I have thought that I would be at the mate ceremony of the man who made me hate myself; the man who broke my heart by rejecting me so publicly that I became a laughingstock.

That had been the worst day of my life; a day that I would always hate. It was a day that was burned into my mind.

I had turned nineteen and he was the first one that the Moon goddess had brought my way as my mate. I had been so happy, and I remember my mom telling me for the first time in my life that she was proud of me.

And trust me, that was huge for me to hear her say those words.

You see, like a lot of omegas, my family was broken and damaged. We were treated like trash because of our rank and no one saw us as anything. My dad died when I was younger, maybe around eleven.

I don’t remember much from him, but I did know that he was part of the pack’s army and one day he had gone to fight rogue werewolves and never came back.

Like I said, I don’t remember much from him, I was young, but I do remember how loudly and bitterly my mother had cried when she had gotten the news that evening.

She blamed him.

She said that she had warned him about going that day, and about fighting for a pack that saw us as nothing. And that she would never forgive him for leaving her and their two daughters.

After Dad was out of the equation, it was now just my mom, my younger sister, and I. Mom worked tirelessly to support us and get us through school, but even at that, it still was not enough.

We would always have a bill to pay that we could not afford at the end of every month. That was something that never changed. So there were months we would go without electricity, or wifi, or heat.

Every month, we had to choose what to sacrifice.

I want to say that like every mother, my mom loved her kids equally. But if I say that, I would be lying. I did not feel that way. My mom saw me as a burden.

She said I reminded her of my dad and that we had a lot in common.

She always yelled at me, and even if I did every single thing right, she would still find something to complain about. But the day that I got mated to a young and established gentleman was the first time she hugged me tightly and said with her whole heart, “I’m proud of you, Sara!”

Like me, she believed that we were about to be saved from poverty.

She believed that she would finally be able to rest and enjoy her old age. And I swear to you, I wanted that. I really did.

But fate had other plans. The night of my mate's ceremony, we were all dressed in fine clothing, under the full moon. Everyone was gathered and…

I really don’t want to live this over again.

But you get the point.

“We need to talk,” He had told me, and as soon as those words were out of his mouth, I knew that something was going to go wrong.

After following him, he had explained, “Sara, I don’t think I’m ready for a mate right now. I…um, I want to try to rediscover myself.”

I remember begging him and even crying for him to change his mind; that I was going to do whatever he wanted.

But he still rejected me that night, in front of everyone.

The sting from the rejection was nothing in comparison to the look of disappointment and disgust that my mom had on her face as she stared at me.

So fast forward to one year later, to today.

Here I was, sitting at the mate ceremony of my ex. Should I refer to him as ex? We never really even dated. So let me just say that I was at the mate ceremony of the man who was supposed to be my life partner.

And crazy enough, he was getting mated to my younger sister. She turned eighteen last week. We both had the same birth month.

Apparently, I was not enough for him, but my sister was.

Can I even blame him?

I was broken. I was to be twenty by next week and I still had not even shifted into my wolf yet. While other teenagers were having full conversations with their wolves, including my sister, mine was silent.

Mine was f*cking silent.

And that’s not all; I was not smart enough. Not pretty enough. Not strong enough. And the list goes on and on. I just was not enough.

I mean, I get it, but this twisted game that the Moon goddess was playing; making me watch my younger sister get mated to the man that I had thought I would be mated to, it was heart wrenching.

I was about to watch her take the life that I should have had a year ago.

The full moon was up, staring down at me as if it was mocking me; as if it was telling me, “You’re not enough.”

There was music playing and people were dancing. I was at the back, I felt too embarrassed to sit where my sister and mother were.

And it was not like my mom wanted me there anyway. I was an embarrassment to her; to the family.

With my third glass of champagne in my hand, I was wearing a black dress, some heels, and my coal-colored hair matching. I had not changed despite what my mom had said about my dress.

I crossed my legs and sipped more of the drink, the lightheadedness getting to me already.

“I would be so embarrassed if I was her,” I heard a girl say to her friend as they walked past where I was sitting, laughing at me.

I decided to distract myself. My heart was too heavy and it felt like I was being stabbed in the chest over and over just by being here. So yeah, I needed a distraction.

That was when I saw…him.

This mysterious man that I had never seen in my life. He was sitting at the back too, alone and quiet. He was barely interacting with anyone and a tight frown sat on his rosy pink lips.

He was wearing black, and man, it looked so good on him.

It was clear that he worked out, his body was showing that off. He was not too buff, but you could tell that he lived in the gym. His hair was blonde, and a bit long and wavy.

He was tattooed heavily and had a very masculine energy radiating off him; one that I was drawn to.

“Who are you?” I whispered to myself.

I don’t know if he felt me looking at him or something, but he suddenly looked my way, our eyes locking.

My heart skipped a beat and I wanted to look away but for some reason, I just could not. It was like something was pulling us to each other.
