The final construction workers left just as the sun was setting, their trucks rolling down the gravel drive, leaving behind the armed security guards guarding the newly finished one-storey modern farmhouse property and its owners, who were there to inspect it.
Their new home, Myla’s long-overdue wedding present and long-buried dream, finally stood ready…. well, almost ready because the interior still remained.
Myla stood at the base of the wraparound porch, wind lifting strands of her hair as she stared up at the structure. It wasn’t as massive as the mansion they had left behind, but it was beautiful in a way that felt real—warm cedar panels, glass doors, and full-length windows that caught the sunlight, and sloping roofs that made it look like part of the mountain behind it.
