Chapter 57. Whispers of The Living
It happened so suddenly that Myla almost dropped the cup of tea she’d been holding when she stepped into the room. The steady rhythm that had filled the ICU for days exploded into rapid, erratic beeps.
“Code Blue, ICU Room 203!” someone shouted.
The door burst open. Nurses and doctors flooded the room, their movements fast and sharp. Myla stood frozen, her heart in her throat, unable to move, unable to breathe.
“Pulse dropping — 30… 25…”
“Prepare the crash cart!”
Beck grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her back, out of their way, just as one of the nurses pushed her aside. Myla’s eyes stayed locked on Hayden’s body — still, pale, wires everywhere, the machines around him flashing like panicked fireflies.
The doctor’s voice was calm but urgent. “Charging to 200. Clear!”
The defibrillator pads pressed against Hayden’s chest. A sharp crack
