I felt a lump in my throat, regret, and guilt gnawing at me—the weight of my decisions pressed down on me like a huge stone. I felt bad that I was bringing so much trouble into these people’s lives when all I wanted was to get away from a terrible life. 

Bad luck just seemed to follow me everywhere I went. 

Beta Mark’s anger simmered as he stared at me. “Zach should have consulted us. He can’t just put you on his shoulders like a backpack and go around making difficult decisions without our input,” He asserted, his frustration evident. 

“I mean, yes, he is the Alpha of the pack, but he isn’t alone,” He added. 

“I didn’t know,” I stammered. My voice was shaky. “I didn’t know it would come to this. I never wanted to cause trouble for anyone. “ And that was the truth.
