The rain had been falling since the afternoon, thin silver needles that turned the academy’s lawns into a mist-softened dreamscape. By the time evening came, the storm had settled into a steady rhythm, like the slow pulse of something inevitable.
Evangeline sat in her office with the lights dimmed, watching the raindrops race each other down the window. Her desk was bare—most of her personal items already packed away. Tomorrow morning, she would hand over the keys, and her time as headmistress would be over.
She had expected relief. Instead, she felt only the hollow ache of inevitability.
The knock at her door came softly—too soft to be anyone but Seraphine.
“Come in,” she said, her voice catching.
The door opened, and Isobel stepped in, her hair still damp from the rain, her cheeks flushed from the night air. She didn’t speak. She just closed the door behind her and leaned against it, the wood pressing into her back.
