"I didn't expect Carla to call me," I told Zed.

My parents stayed with Lena in the dining room. Zed and I remained in the kitchen.

I still felt affected by Carla's call. The way she spoke disgusted me. It gave me chills to think that Carla was that kind of person. I still couldn't comprehend how someone could pretend to be so good. Carla was a top-notch actress. She knew how to provoke both me and Lena. They knew how to cause us pain and confusion. She was an expert in creating fear.

"Have you noticed? Do you understand now what I meant? When she claimed I mistreated her, it was never true. I defended myself from her when she tried to harm me, and I defended Lena when I saw she was being attacked."

I rubbed my face. I had my elbows on the counter.

"I feel like an idiot, Zed."

"You are."

"You're not helping. I don't feel any better if you say that."
