Chapter 37
Frère Jacques. Frère Jacques
Dormez-vous. Dormez-vous
Sonnez les matines. Sonnez les matines
Ding, dang, dong. Ding, dang, dong
Emma sang to a three-year-old, Lionel, to lull him to sleep. He squealed and smiled, his eyes partly closing. She smiled back while patting his hair. She usually tucked him into bed with songs. Her parents did the same, too.
Her mother was hanging clothes in the wardrobe while her father was arranging books in the small wooden bookshelf he'd created. It was a few minutes to 8:00 pm, and they were in their room in the basement.
Lionel's eyes were completely shut now. Emma's father was done with arranging the books. He sat down on the bed. Emma stopped singing. She knew he was totally lost in sleep.
"You should go to bed, my angel," her father said to her.
"Yes."
Emma gazed at the smaller bed in the room. The one that belonged to her. There were only two beds in the room.
