Chapter 49. Breaking the Ice

"Mrs. Cooper." Din called. After his eyes left Bev, his gaze returned to Jessie. "Are you aware of how much I hate you?" He nodded and laughed a little before returning to a serious expression with a frown. "You're putting in a lot of effort, which is exhausting," he said, pointing to the food on the table. "You're trying so hard to win my favor, but it'll never work."

"All right, that's enough." Bev stepped over to Jessie and said. "Is that the reason you've come to this house? To be treated like this by this man?" She made a gesture at Din. "If you're not happy, Jessie, let's get out of here. Marco has already been cruel to you. You can't put up with this because of mom and me." She grasped Jessie's hand in hers, but Jessie snatched it back and went away, crying.

Din felt awful because of what he said. Sierra sat back down in the chair. She raised her eyes to his. "Are you content now?" She asked. "You've made her cry."
