Chapter 43. Steppingstone

Victoria’s POV

The morning dawned crisp and cold, the faint light of dawn filtering through a thin veil of frost dusting the windowpanes. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring out at the icy patterns, lost in thought.

Despite the chill in the room, I could still feel the lingering warmth of Dominic’s steady gaze from yesterday. His penetrating eyes had followed me even in my dreams, leaving a mark that I couldn’t shake.

No matter how hard I tried to focus, his image resurfaced, stealing my attention like an unwelcome guest. I rubbed my temples, frustration building.

“Enough,” I muttered to myself, shaking off the distraction as I rose to dress.

I reached for my usual work attire, pulling on a thick knit sweater and tailored slacks. My fingers lingered briefly on my necklace hanging on my neck; it had become a sort of lucky charm for me now. I loved it dearly and I almost couldn’t go anywhere without it.
