"I am so sorry, darling," he speaks in a whisper. "That will never happen to you again. I swear."

As Lexcis said, "You cannot promise that." We know we cannot keep the promises we keep making to each other. I feel his hand on my neck, and he runs his fingers along my jaw until he cups my cheek.

"I am going to keep every promise I make to you, love. I am going to keep you safe," he pledges, his voice filled with determination.

I let him in after all the thoughts that were going through my head and after telling myself that life is unfair and that you should not count on anyone. "You promise?" I ask with a weaker voice than ever.
