The only other time I saw him like this was in those blasted dungeons.
That pain must have reminded him of those times. Hearing me scream like that may have triggered memories of his mother. Damn.
I am fighting to hold back my emotions as I lay my hands on his face. His eyes are wide, expecting my next words. Whatever I say will either soothe him down or absolutely shatter him.
"What happened to your mother was terrible; no woman, mother, parent, or human in general should ever have to go through that. Lexcis was a powerful woman. She was extraordinary, and she adored you. She loved you, and you loved her. That is all that matters." I pause, gently wiping away a tear rolling down his cheek.
"It is my fault," he says, shaking his head. "I should have safeguarded her and been there for her. He said it himself." His voice trembles with guilt.
"What did he say?"
"He said it was my fault.
