And then, as though the universe itself wanted to test me, I felt a strange move in the forest and I froze but slowly turned back. I gasped when I locked eyes with some sets of golden eyes

My breath hitched. My body froze. My heart thundered so violently I thought it might burst from my chest.

“Ah!” I screamed, stumbling back as the weight of something small and rough landed square on my shoulder. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest.

When I looked, I hissed

It was just a lizard.

Its body was small, black as tar, but its eyes were golden and that scared me. Why would a lizard have golden eyes? And it kept staring right into me like it wanted to crawl into my soul.

“Get off!” I shrieked, my voice echoed thr
