The first sob was the hardest to make seem natural. I didn’t want to sound fake. It had to be as natural as possible. In my mind, when I acted, everything was as calm and soft as could be. By crying so loudly, I realized that maybe it could sound too fake.
The man reacted in different ways to my sudden crying. First, he seemed startled. Then, he made a gesture of concern as if he were looking at a crazy person. And then, his expression was more of sorrow or pity.
“I don’t understand… The queen’s sister. I didn’t know there was a lost sister.” He touched his chin, trying to remember.
The ungrateful Dove didn’t spread the word in this kingdom about my disappearance. That further reinforced the hatred that was infiltrated in my heart. They weren’t my family.
