Chapter 167. The Slap

Luc ran down the stairs to Giovanna's cell. He opened the door and she was lying cross-legged on the mattress. Luc went over to her and lifted her violently.

"What have you done?"

Giovanna stared at him defiantly.

"Nothing she didn't deserve!" Giovanna said, believing he was talking about Meg.

Luc slapped her so hard that she felt her hand burn.

Giovanna put her hand to her face and looked at him angrily, but the disappointment was greater.

"What have you done to my son?"

She stared at him uncomprehendingly and the genuine confusion in her eyes disarmed Luc. Why hadn't it crossed his mind for a minute that Theo was lying? He had reason to sow discord between Luc and Giovanna. Did Theo see that he was happy? He raised his hand to caress Giovanna, but she pulled away with fury shining in her eyes.
