Chapter 116. Mr. Jason Carmichael
Carlos heard the intruder the moment they made it through the door, but even he could tell that they were as silent as a cat. He almost could not hear them. His room had carpeting, and if his ears weren’t still being trained to keep the adaptation he’d gotten from his time with the Torturer and to pick up the subtlest of sounds, he would not have been able to hear it. He waited until they were close enough. It was risky business.
Even though they were supposed to get louder when they got closer, logically, they put in so much effort into keeping quiet that Carlos would often miss the sound of a step or two before getting it back. And he had to make sure that the intruder did not suspect that he was awake while also keeping alert long enough that he did not get murdered in his sleep.
The intruder clearly did not come into the room with the intention to kill; he could hear them sifting through his things, through the papers on the coffee table and the bag on the floor next
