Chapter 31. Opening a Pandora’s Box
Carlos told them about McCarthy when they were miles away. He was in the back of the van, going over everything that had happened while he was inside.
He had debated whether to tell them, wondering if they would be upset to find out he hadn’t killed him. They weren’t. They all stared at him as if he’d grown two heads. He could feel the stares even though his gaze was lowered, focused on his gloved hands. It was Pistol who broke the silence before it went on too long.
“You did a clean job,” he said. “And what would be the point of assassinating the old politician? He wouldn’t know what hit him. I prefer to see him raging and frustrated.”
“Yeah,” a few people murmured, and the topic was put behind them. They went over the things Carlos could’ve done better. They reminded him that he didn’t need to do it all alone; their men were placed strategically and could have turned the place upside down if needed. Still, they didn’t hide the fact that he did a decent job.
