I was back inside the packhouse before I realized how fast I was moving.

Someone had left clothes in my room. I pulled them on without bothering with the lights and was out again almost immediately.

The hall outside her room was quiet compared to the chaos still running through the rest of the house.

I knocked once and opened the door.

Daphne sat near the foot of the bed, cleaning the scrape along Chloe’s knee. Chloe had changed out of her ruined white dress and into one of Abby’s oversized shirts.

My mother sat beside Abby.

Abby was curled beneath a thick blanket, knees drawn up, her body still trembling despite the warmth of the room. Someone had helped her into a nightdress. Her hair was tangled from shifting, her eyes swollen and red.
