“You aren’t?” Donna Marta asked, her brows knitting together. Calla nodded, a pang of guilt hitting her suddenly.

“Don’t lie to me, Lyra,” Donna Marta said firmly.

Calla sighed, shaking her head. “I’m telling the truth. Rico and I are not in a relationship,” she repeated, her voice low, the words spilling out steadily this time.

"Then what are you?" Donna Marta asked.

“I’m something temporary, not permanent," she bit her lip and released it. She felt a dull ache in her chest as she said. "A circumstance."

It was like she was saying it more to herself, as a reminder, than to Donna Marta.
