“They are chasing my shadow,” she said. “I did not want them overhearing us.”
“There could be others,” he said.
“But there aren’t.” Her eyes sparkled in the twilight. “You can look for yourself.”
Mike didn’t bother. “What do you have to show me?”
“This place is made of many castles. Did you know that, Mike Radley?” Nyx grinned. “Some people collect rocks. Others, lovers. Vincentius collects castles.”
“And what, mashes them together?”
“In a way. Such a thing was once in his power, if it isn’t still.” Nyx put her hand on the statue’s back. “I have wandered these halls, asking the walls to remember. This knight in particular happens to have seen some very interesting things.”
“Well, let’s not hog all the conversation then.” Mike patted the statue on the shoulder. “Sir knight, if you could tell us what you saw, I’d appreciate it.”
Nyx narrowed her eyes at him. “You mock the memory of the stone?”
“No. I loathe standing over the abyss.
