Chapter 40. Jaqueline's Condition Improves
Gilbert came to his senses in the evening, but there had been no improvement in Jacqueline’s condition. The good thing was, she hadn’t worsened either, and the doctors were trying their best. The whole night, Gilbert lay beside her on his bed and watched her lying still.
He was still at risk and wasn’t released, but he wanted to get down from his bed and hold her hands and talk to her. He wanted to remind her of their love, of a happy wedded life awaiting them. Tears fell incessantly from his eyes. He hadn’t even got to marry her and here she was contemplating upon leaving him forever.
“If I have the willpower to survive a heart attack for you, don’t you have the strength to survive a shock for me, Juliet?” he asked her. She didn’t respond, but lay still. Only her steady breathing proved she was still alive.
“Why did you have to love me so much if you were planning to desert me, Juliet? You know I can’t live without you?” he said as more tears fell from his eyes. H
