Chapter 24. The Investigation Is Over
“Carmella, you need to rest dear,” said a worried Margaret at the young girl who lay like a statue for the last three hours, staring at a distant tree outside the window of her room.
“Try to get some sleep.”
“Why did my baby go back to God, Margaret? I could have taken care of it,” said Carmella, without a blink of her eyes, as if in a trance.
“It will come back again to you, dear. Try to close your eyes and get some sleep,” said Margaret, sitting on the side of the bed and stroking her hair.
“I can’t sleep. I wanted to hold my baby to my chest. It’s all I had of Jaxon. He doesn’t love me anymore, Margaret. He thinks I’m a thief, but I swear upon my dead baby, I didn’t steal them,” she mumbled, as if talking to herself.
“Hush, dear, I know you’re innocent, and believe me, the truth will soon be out,” she comforted, stroking Carmella’s hair. Carmella closed her eyes slowly as sleep overcame her. All the time Margaret stroked
