Just for the moment, Mr. Gerald promised himself silently. At the first moment of danger, he would report everything that happened that day.
“Thank you.”
Cassandra opened the door and made her way into the house, rejecting the maid who offered to help carry her duffel bag with a pleasant smile.
As soon as she got into the safety of her room, she shut the door securely behind her, heading the satisfying click of the lock falling into place before she made her way to her bed. This was the second close shave she had been in within a matter of days. She had gotten lucky twice now; she barely escaped with her life the first time, and she barely survived crashing into another car this time around.
The second time’s a charm, but she might not be so lucky the third time around.
A sharp knock on her door interrupts her train of thought.
“Good evening, miss. It’s time for dinner.” A maid rattled off as soon as she opened the door.
