Book 3: Tomorrow
Hollis
‘Got some more over here,’ Zain calls through the mind-link.
I drag the heavy cart across the red-mottled snow toward my Beta. My muscles burn with exertion, but I’m not stopping until this whole battlefield is clear. I won’t let a wolf suffer longer than they have to.
Zain nudges ice off a half-covered wolf. Blood paints his coat, but he’s still wheezing in shallow breaths.
‘Can you hear me?’ I attempt to ask him.
No answer. It’s impossible to tell what side he belongs to with all the gore on his side, but being able to talk to him would only make this a little easier. I shake my head at Zain, and we both shift to either end of the injured wolf.
‘Three…two….’
We lift in unison. The wolf between us whines in helpless pain—a good sign, I’ve learned, because it means he’s still conscious—and we lay him as gently as we can on the back of the cart of wounded.
Another team manages the cart carrying the dead. Thankful
