Book 4: Weakness

Finn’s eyes burn into mine, that impossible blue, cold as ice and hot as the center of a flame. My heart aches. Another spasm wracks me.
They are just like Hana described. A wave of agony, rippling through my abdomen, so potent I can barely think. The pain of the scratches Corwyn left behind disappears under each.
It feels like labor. So early our babies will certainly die.
Finn is right.
And I cannot reach Hana on my own.
“All right,” I tell him. “I will go—but only if you come with me.”
Corwyn lunges at us, snarling. “I am no mere ornament you can ignore. I will slaughter you both and bless the new world with your blood.”
Finn whips around, shoulders him back. The blood Corwyn promised drips down Finn’s silver fur, but he doesn’t even grimace as he turns back to me. “I can end this.”
“You are one of my priorities,” I reply. “And I need you to watch my back.”
