For a second, I just looked at him, my mind stuck somewhere between shock and confusion. This wasn’t what it sounded like… right?
Eric noticed my frozen expression and quickly shook his head. “Hey…no. This isn’t a proposal.”
Heat rushed straight to my face. Embarrassment burned everywhere. “I…I know that. I didn’t think you were proposing,” I blurted out, even though that was exactly what I’d thought.
He sighed softly. “We’ve talked about this before, Elena. Marriage just isn’t something I believe in. I don’t see myself ever needing it. That’s on me…not you.”
“I know,” I muttered, wishing I could disappear into the floor. “You don’t have to explain.”
He reached out and caught my hands before I could hide my face. “Still… when I need a partner by my side, I want it to be you. Always.”
