Shun’s soft chuckle crackled through the speaker. “Don’t sweat it, Campbell. The Queen and her Nathan are right behind you.”
Thomas’s shoulders eased by a fraction. Shun’s assurance always came with that familiar ease—as if Shun could see all angles no matter where they hid in the shadows. “Okay,” Thomas said, forcing a casual tone that didn’t quite reach his voice.
“Have fun!” Shun quipped, and with that, the line went dead.
Thomas glanced at the small paper bag in his hand—two sandwiches, a side of coleslaw he promised himself he’d actually eat this time. He paid quickly, the clerk offering a perfunctory smile that barely registered. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed, their harsh glare reflecting off his car’s windshield. Nothing seemed amiss. If the bait had worked, he would have found a tampered lock or a loose panel. Instead, everything looked factory-tight, as though the bastard who set this trap had second thoughts at the last moment.
