Chapter 30
Avery’s POV
I suppose I should be grateful I don’t have to go back to the casino, even though I miss the place a little. Seated in the office of the executive director in a simple, short black dress and biting my nails to the skin, I await the arrival of Davis and Inspector Malik so that my fate can be decided. Already, word has spread to everyone that I derailed off track during the course of an investigation and started working with the bad guys.
Coming to work today was the most stressful thing I have experienced in a long while, as I was made to feel like a leper. Nobody spoke to me and when I called out to Alice, she glared down her nose at me like I was scrap from a dump site and fitfully ignored me.
The worst of all was Sophie, who did talk to me, but much of her words were thinly veiled insults and open threats. According to her, I should consider myself lucky if I don’t bag at least ten years for this. For loving a man.
