A gust of warm evening air rustled through the ferns lining the stone pathway as Alpha Killan’s deep voice cut through their conversation. “What’s going on here?” His tone was low, with an edge of steel, and both Camila and Ash spun around so quickly that their chairs scraped the flagstones. When their eyes met Killan’s, they found him standing only a few paces behind them, hands splayed against his trousers, knuckles white as though he were bracing himself.
Ash’s chest tightened. The afternoon sunlight gleamed off Killan’s dark hair, casting shadows across the sharp planes of his face. Camila, sensing the tension coiling in the air, forced a gentle smile and slipped out of her chair first. She reached for Ash’s hand, giving it a quick, reassuring squeeze.
