“I know this world is dark,” he continued, his hand brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. “I know you don’t belong in it. But I will never let it touch you. I will never let anyone lay a finger on you.”
She wanted to protest, to tell him that the violence unsettled her, that the sight of blood had made her stomach lurch. But there was something deeper in his gaze—something raw, possessive, unshakable.
