Chapter 63. I Don't Pay You Premium to Ask Me Questions!

She leans back against the headboard, knees drawn to her chest beneath the blanket. The bruise near her hip which she got during the 'accident' is already darkening. I saw it earlier when she changed. I haven’t stopped seeing it since.
Her fingers brush mine.
“You should go back to your work,” she says softly. “You’ve got a whole operation to run.”
I stare at her.
She holds my gaze, not trembling anymore—but not steady either.
“You don’t have to worry about me. Not here,” she continues. “Not with the guards stationed all over this place. He won’t follow me here. He wouldn’t dare.”
I stay silent. Let her finish.
“This is your world. Not his. He doesn’t even belong in the same category. Your reputation knocks on doors before you even reach them, remember?”
That almost makes me smirk.
Almost.
She’s right.
Even the rats in this city know better than to breathe wrong when it comes to me.
