Chapter 83. Trapped
Rae:
I pace.
Left to right.
Right to left.
The distance between the rug and the glass doors is barely four steps, but I’ve worn a path now, a line my thoughts can walk without me.
Eliza’s still by the window.
Her arms folded, body stiff.
Teeth worrying at her nail again, as if biting deeper might pull news out of thin air.
Every few minutes, she glances at the gate.
Then at me.
Then the gate again.
And finally, like clockwork, her voice—
“Rae… Kieran will be okay, right?”
I stop pacing. Look at her. Force a nod.
“S won’t let anything happen to him.”
I say it again because I need to hear it too.
“He promised they’d watch each other’s backs.”
She nods, but she doesn’t look convinced.
I’m not sure I am either.
Another silence stretches between us, uncomfortable in the corners. I want to break it but don’t know how. Eliza does it for me.
“This… Leonardo,” she mutters,
