Chapter 26
“How are you feeling, my dear?” Mommy asked, stroking her daughter’s head. She was trying hard not to shed tears in front of Habiba. It had been six days, and she still wasn’t making any progress. Pain was all Habiba could feel and understand.
She smiled, though it didn’t reach her heart. “Mommy…” she whispered, her voice trailing off.
“My baby, speak up, okay? Do you need anything? Are you hungry?” Mommy asked. Habiba shook her head.
“Where is Adil? I haven’t seen him since I woke up,” she murmured, glancing toward the door as if he would appear.
“I told him to go home and rest. He hasn’t been sleeping well for the past five days. I’m sure he’ll be back soon,” Mommy explained.
Habiba nodded weakly. “Let me go call the doctor,” Mommy added before sauntering out of the room.
She met Layla on the way to Dr. Wasila’s office. “Oh, good morning, Doctor... Mahdi?” Mommy greeted. Layla smiled and nodded. “Good morning, ma'am. How’s Habiba doi
