I also came to a halt and looked at her.

Her face showed surprise at my question, but she quickly composed herself and avoided eye contact.

“We... We...”

She bit her lower lip, and her eyes started to well up with tears.

I mentally scolded myself for being so insensitive.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable. You don’t need to answer it anyway. Maybe it’s best if we just head back to the academy.”

I reached for her hand and began walking.

“We used to be best friends back then,” she finally spoke up.

I blinked and raised an eyebrow at her.

What the hell?

I didn’t respond immediately, giving her the space to continue.
