“Bad news, Silvia,” Mr. Black’s voice came through my phone speaker. “Alpha Sherman ‘s refusing to sign the divorce papers. We’re looking at a contested divorce now.”

“Seriously?” My stomach clenched as I leaned against Henrry’s fancy kitchen counter.

The sandwich ingredients I’d laid out suddenly looked about as appetizing as cardboard.

“His childish ‘NO’ isn’t legally binding,” Mr. Black continued. “He can’t stop the divorce permanently, but he can drag it out, make it expensive, and turn it into a public spectacle.”

“How expensive are we talking?” I whispered, already feeling my meager savings account shrinking.

Mr. Green’s heavy sigh said it all. “Substantially more. More court filings, more legal hours, possibly expert witnesses if he decides to challenge anything specific. We’ll need to discuss a new payment plan.”
