Chapter 256. Pent up

~3RD PERSON'S POV~

The murmuring of maids and the clicking of their shoes against the wooden floor were some of the sounds that could be heard in the mansion. Females giggling and slicing off leaves could be heard in the gardens, and even louder murmuring from the cafeteria. 

Marie sat at a table by herself, staring at the soup in her bowl. Her eyes were focused on the meal, but she carried a blank expression on her face, her eyes seemingly distant from the reality in front of her. She used the spoon to slowly stir the soup, then pulled it out of the bowl and placed it between her lips.

“Hey!” Cynthia’s voice sounded as she dropped onto the seat opposite Marie, breaking her out of her mental stillness. The spoon dropped from Marie’s hand back into the bowl, and she raised her eyes slowly to meet Cynthia's.

She assessed Cynthia's face for a moment, then asked softly, “You seem really happy today. What's going on?”
